How to Keep Safe When Using Download Stores

It can be tempting to download software and other digital content from the Internet, especially with all the new and exciting programs being created from day to day. However, if you don’t choose your download store carefully, you could end up with a malware-infected device. Here are tips to help you keep safe while as you buy products from a download store:

1. Be wary of automatic downloads.

Every now and then, you may come across sites that attempt to download and install software on your computer without you asking them to. Avoid these sites at all costs, unless you’re sure of its trustworthiness. Automatic or drive-by downloads are often used by infected sites to plant malware in your computer. Reject all such downloads as you encounter them. Cancel the download as quickly as you can or close your browser. If the download has been completed before you could stop it, scan it or delete it right then and there. Unless you know for sure it is safe, do not open the file.

2. Stick to products made by trusted sources.

When using a download store, the first cardinal rule is to select one that is popular and reputable. More than anything, the safety and reliability of the site should be considered. Luckily, a quick search online can give you all you need to know about a particular download store before you begin downloading.

Accepting and initiating a software download is a big no-no if you haven’t read the documentation. There are so many websites on the web that feature software reviews and ratings, so do check them out to add to your peace of mind. Just make sure you’re on an independent website and not a marketing website that a software developer himself has put up.

3. Put your antivirus software to use to check potential downloads.

Rock solid and up-to-date antivirus software is one of the best things you can have on your computer to shield it from threats. This software must be used for file scanning before installation. To do this, you usually have to right-click on the file and select the scan option. The antivirus software will give the downloaded software a check and tell you if it’s safe or not.

4. Look for signs of file authenticity in the specs.

One way to check a file’s authenticity is by comparing its file name and size to what’s listed on the download store’s website. File specs can be found in Properties (right-click on the file). If there are any disparities, it could be a sign that the file is infected.

The above-mentioned tips are only some that you should practice when you buy digital content from a download store. Needless to say, you should never download anything whose safety you cannot ascertain.
